Virginia Apgar

Virginia Apgar was born on 7th June 1909 in New Jersey, the United States. She was a doctor, specialized in anaesthesia applied in childbirth and paediatrics, who created the famous Apgar Test, which is the method currently used to check the health of newborn babies. This test is applied to all babies at two moments immediately after delivery: at one minute and then again at five minutes after the birth. It determines 5 simple aspects of the newborn: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration. The Apgar score has reduced child mortality worldwide because it makes sure that newborn babies receive the appropriate medical attention they need. More than half a century later her method is still being used!
